Heat-Strengthened Glass

Produced with the same process as tempered glass but cooled more slowly. Surface tension is lower — roughly 2× the strength of annealed glass, breaking into larger fragments similar to annealed.

Heat-Strengthened Glass

Process

  • Heated similarly to tempered glass but cooled more slowly, producing lower surface compression.
  • Uses the same broad range of base glass as tempering, subject to pattern and coating compatibility.

Advantages

  • About twice the strength and heat resistance of annealed glass
  • Breaks into larger fragments that tend to remain in the frame — suited for IGU inner panes and spandrels
  • Very low risk of NiS spontaneous breakage compared with tempered
  • Withstands approximately 290 °C and thermal shock of around 100 °C

Limitations and inspection

  • Suitable for spandrels, IGUs and wind-loaded glazing where safety glass is not mandated.
  • Cannot be cut, drilled, notched or edge-worked after processing; roller wave or bow may occur.
  • Not a safety-glass substitute for tempered glass. Large fragments can fall from frameless work, so loads and retention must be engineered.
  • Minimum size is 180 × 180 mm. Do not use for roofs, floors, stairs or fire barriers.
  • Verification uses destructive testing or polarizing film.
