Laminated Glass

Construction and materials

• May combine plate, sheet, float, tinted, reflective, mirror, tempered and heat-strengthened glass.
• PVB is available clear, tinted and in multiple translucencies; layers can be combined for custom colors and performance.
• EVA/EN can encapsulate decorative paper, fabric or plastic and needs less humidity control than PVB.
• Stronger SGP enables thinner structures and suits exposed edges or humid locations, but not permanent immersion.
• Special assemblies may use cast-resin lamination.

Advantages

• On breakage, fragments adhere to the film — no flying shards
• PVB film filters 99% of UV, protecting interior furnishings from fading
• Reduces sound transmission — suits buildings near noise sources
• Extra security: the opening remains sealed until the pane is replaced

Limitations and selection

• At equal total thickness it carries less load than one monolithic pane; PVB edges require moisture protection to prevent delamination.
• High-rise, roof and fall-risk glazing requires engineered glass, interlayer, deflection and support selection, not price-only selection.
• Laminated glass delays heat briefly but is not thermal insulation equivalent to an IGU.
• Low-E coatings require correct surface orientation; use heat-soaked tempered glass where NiS risk matters.
• Inspect edges, bubbles, contamination and delamination before installation.
